Why does my 2002 Civic make a popping noise when I turn on the air conditioning?

I have a 2002 Honda Civic. Everytime I turn on my air conditioning, there is a persistent popping noise that seems to be coming from my engine.What could be the source of the noise, and is it something I should get checked immediately? Thanks.
