I live in Washington DC, and walk about 30 minutes to work and back everyday. I see dudes fly by me on their scooters and it really makes me want one. Any scooter evangelists out there that can tell me some great things about owning a scooter, and what some things are I should look for in my first purchase?

Do you need a special license to get a scooter? Or is it like a bike?

If the scooter is under 50cc, then you do not need a license and you can part it on the side-walk. If you are only going to use the scooter to get around DC, the 49cc ones will do. If you want something with a little more power, you will need a valid motorcycle license and start paying insurance... etc.
Personally if I live in DC, I'd definitely get a scooter. Although technically lane-splitting is not legal, but the cops don't seems to enforce it, it really beats sitting in the crazy DC traffic any time!
