Given that more than 15 million were produced, everybody has a well-formed idea of what constitutes a Ford Model T. It usually goes something like flivver, folded-down touring top, black on black on black. Not here, though, as this version is full of color. This Model T received a repaint in uncommonly bright colors about 10 years ago, and has been used often on tours. The car has a redone interior, and was restored using original or NOS parts. POWERTRAIN The standard engine in every Model T was the L-head inline-four displacing 176.5 cubic inches. With a compression ratio of 3.98:1, the engine received its fuel mixture via a single downdraft carburetor and was rated by the manufacturer at 20 horsepower. The engine in this Model T is original to the car. The engine has an electric starter in addition to a hand crank. The planetary transmission operates smoothly. Minor oil leaks, normal to a Model T, are noted. The engine bay is stock and free of any corrosion. EXTERIOR The Model T is finished in a combination of red and black that exhibits no blemishes. The radiator shell and headlamp buckets are finished in black. Any rusted areas on the car were removed during the restoration and replaced with original Model T steel. The vinyl-style roof insert has been replaced with new materials. The door seals and hinges are in good shape. The window glass and windshield are free of cracks and scratches. A Motometer is atop the radiator cap and the spare tire has a fabric cover. The underside of the car is impressively clean. INTERIOR The Model Ts original-style seats have replacement upholstery and facings. Not all the flooring is carpeted, but what is in place is in good shape. A new, expansive wraparound area of polished wood veneer now adorns the back-seat area. The painted steel dashboards only instrument is an ammeter, which is functional. CHASSIS The Model T was not equipped with shock absorbers, but the chassis components are in good condition and no suspension work has been required. The brakes, which sit on the rear wheels, and transmission are in good working order. The wooden spoke wheels, believed to be original to the car, have been restored and are in good shape, as are the tires.
